(VA gun laws) wisest way to acquire
In Virginia, does one have to register a gun purchase not done through a dealer, or do a background check? I assume records of FFLs are kept, as are those of background checks...
I looked on TheHighRoad and could not find one for sale nearby, so the crux lies within the answer of the following conundrum: should I hasten and do an FFL, or should I wait and possibly stay under the radar, even if I must pay for the luxury. Also, I shall go to the gun club this weekend; I sent an email to the president but have yet to get a reply. |

Private sales, no paperwork, federally....you might check locally.
See also Packing.org Personally, I don't like the paperwork, but I also take the position that once bought, what's mine is mine.....and nobody is getting it unless I consent. |

In va a non-felon can buy a gun from a private person..face to face, peovided both parties are Va residents.
I usually just look at thier drivers license. Sometimes the other party wants a reciept. |

Maybe I'm a moron but I still don't get why so many survival-minded individuals eschew sales on paper with the ferocity that they do. Yes, paperless is better, no question. But man, if the paper trail has become the means through which the State has decided to track down weapons and take them away from their owners, shouldn't that be an indication that the time has come to USE them? |
Re: (VA gun laws) wisest way to acquire
Check the classified ads in the paper. Also, post a WTB (Want to Buy) ad on TheHighRoad. I've had good success there.
Additionally, an occasional gun as will survive on CraigsList... if you know how to search for them. You can also do a WTB on CraigsList. |

mine's still up, no takers :rolleyes_m: I was offered motorcycle parts, but I don't ride and wouldn't know how to resell. Maybe I should post it in "for sale" instead of wanted. |

Re: (VA gun laws) wisest way to acquire
CDNN Sports has a bunch of good deals on pistols; used Berretta 96F is selling for $299, while used Glock 22 is selling for $369.
Catalog(wont download with firefox, use Internet Explorer) http://www.cdnninvestments.com/dowournewcat.html They do not list pistol prices in the online catalog above, but they do in the mail-order catalog that is sitting in front of me. If you want to know any prices, let me know the page number. http://i8.tinypic.com/6nr1qfr.gif |

Still not sure what to make of that PMed offer; any help would be appreciated

Re: (VA gun laws) wisest way to acquire
5.45 is NOT the same as 7.62x39 the standard AK-47 round. Never heard of a 5.62, better check your numbers. The 5.45x39 is the AK-74 round. BTW the 5.45 is the caliber, the 39 is the length of the brass in mm.
Always check your receiver before attempting to fire any ammo through it. If not sure, or if the receiver is not marked, DONT SHOOT IT. Good luck. BTW: bakelite is a type of material used to manuf the magazines. Usually an AK-74 round. |

Skirnir it looks like you might be getting confused as to what calibers apply to what rifles or you just typed the wrong number. Since a picture is worth a thousand words here's a picture of the different calibers for size comparison. Sorry for the extra caliber but I didn't have another picture handy.
See pic below: Left -> Right: 5.56x45 (ignore), 5.45x39 (AK-74) and 7.62x39 (AK-47) |
Re: (VA gun laws) wisest way to acquire
Thanks for the advice; I didn't reply to the offer as it was the wrong ammo.
Besides the AK itself, and the 7,62x39 ammo, what components should I buy for the AK? In addition, should I go ahead and just get an FFL transfer, as I cannot find anything locally? |
